Outreach

  • Pacific Beach Coalition

    Grades 4-8.

Cleaning up a beach is a valuable and meaningful community service activity for students. Beaches are often a source of recreation for many people and serve as a habitat for a variety of wildlife, so it is important to keep them clean and healthy.

By participating in a beach cleanup, students have the opportunity to learn about the impact of marine debris and litter on the environment and the wildlife that depend on it. They can also make a tangible difference by removing trash and litter from the sand and water, helping to preserve the beauty and health of the beach for future generations.

This type of community service is a great way for students to learn about environmental stewardship and the importance of taking action to protect the planet. It can also foster a sense of community and teamwork, as students work together to achieve a common goal.

Additionally, beach cleanups can provide an opportunity for students to engage with their local community and to raise awareness about the issue of marine debris. By taking an active role in preserving their local beach, students can demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability and inspire others to take action.

  • Operation Christmas Child

All grades donate. Grades 6-8 pack and send out boxes.

Collecting toys and necessities for students in need around the world is a wonderful community service project for students. This type of project not only provides an opportunity for students to help make a difference in the lives of children in need, but it also teaches them the importance of giving, empathy, and global awareness.

In addition to collecting toys and necessities, students also learn about the different cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, and struggles of the children they are helping. This broadens their perspectives and helps them understand the value of diversity and the importance of supporting one another.

  • San Bruno Senior Center

    Grades 6-8

The middle school students of Highlands Christian Schools have been actively volunteering at the San Bruno Senior Center, where they assist in serving lunch to the seniors. Beyond helping with meals, the students engage in meaningful "intergenerational activities" that foster connection and fun. These activities include, but are not limited to, ping-pong, corn hole, and bocce. On special occasions, the students also participate in creative projects with the seniors, such as making cards, adding a personal and heartfelt touch to their time together.

Through these experiences, the students not only contribute to the well-being of the seniors but also build friendships, develop empathy, and experience the joy that comes from serving others. The smiles, laughter, and shared moments make each visit a truly rewarding and memorable experience for both the students and the seniors.

The activities at the center also align with the vision and mission of Highlands Christian Schools, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also social and emotional development.

  • City Team

    Grades ALL

Highlands Christian School, in partnership with the Church of the Highlands, actively participates and collaborates with City Team in their food packing and distribution programs. On designated dates, students sign up—through their parents—to assist with food distribution at key locations, creating meaningful opportunities for parent-child bonding while serving the community.

In addition to these regular activities, middle school students often partner with Church of the Highlands volunteers to travel to San Francisco and other areas to distribute goods to community centers, serve meals, and even help decorate buildings and surrounding areas. These experiences allow students to directly engage with the community, develop a sense of compassion and service, and contribute positively to the lives of those in need.

Through these programs, Highlands Christian School not only instills values of generosity and empathy in its students but also strengthens the connection between families, the church, and the wider community.

  • Neighborhood Clean Up

    Grades 6-8

Middle school students engaging in community service in their neighborhoods surrounding the school campus.

Cleaning the streets of garbage is a great way for students to make a tangible difference in their community. It not only makes the area look better, but it also has environmental benefits. By meeting neighbors during their community service, students can build relationships and create a sense of community. This can lead to further collaboration and cooperation in the future.

Engaging in community service can also create a sense of pride in the community for both the students and their neighbors. By seeing the positive impact they have made, students can feel a sense of accomplishment and take pride in their work. Similarly, neighbors can feel grateful and proud of the efforts made by the students to improve their community.
